Chinese Market - Inbound Market and
NZ Resident Projections
Chinese Inbound Market
“The Chinese outbound market grew at a phenomenal rate in
2010, reaching 54 million outbound trips. The Chinese National
Tourism Administration has said it expects this growth to
accelerate, forecasting outbound travel from China to reach
100 million trips by 2015. The opening of new air routes
linking China and nearby Taiwan to New Zealand has greatly
increased seating capacity and access into New Zealand for
Chinese travellers in 2011.”
* The Chinese inbound market grew 29% to 129,588 visitors
for the year ending April 2011.
* 53% of holiday visitors from China travel to New Zealand
as part of a tour group (YE Dec 2010).

NZ Chinese Resident Projections
According to The National Ethnic Population Projections,
the Asian population living in New Zealand is likely to
increase from 404,000 (2006) to 788,000 (2026), an increase
of around 95%. Based on the 2006 Census, 147,570 Chinese
lived in NZ in 2006, so if the number of Chinese people
living in New Zealand is in line with these projections,
then we can estimate the population of Chinese people living
in NZ at somewhere around 287,000 mark by 2026.
